Recently, and in particular as a result of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, Japanese society is becoming more interested in the idea of being a multicultural society. On the other hand, despite insufficient systems for dealing with “immigrants,” Japan takes in large numbers of people from other countries, particularly from Asia, as labourers. There are currently more than 540,000 foreigners living in Tokyo (as of 1 January 2021), and the question of how we recognise their presence and live together with them is becoming a pressing issue.
Against this social background, Immigration Museum Tokyo (IMM Tokyo) has come up with a project that uses art to involve a variety of people in thinking about multicultural societies. In the exhibition in the winter of 2021, we will try to show diverse views of multicultural society in today’s Japan as seen by artists, activist groups, and residents. How do these people with foreign roots who live among us today adapt, retain and fuse their own roots with their lives in Japan? IMM Tokyo is an attempt to unearth these latent encounters, and as more people see and talk about it aims to raise awareness of the multiculturalism that already exists in Japan.

現代日本社会において、特に東京オリンピック・パラリンピック2020開催を契機に「多文化社会」への関心は大きくなっています。一方、「移民」制度が整備されていないにも関わらず、日本は、アジア諸国を中心に大勢の外国人を労働者として受け入れています。現在、東京で暮らす在留外国人人口は54万人を超え（令和3年1月1日現在）、彼らの存在を認めながらともに暮らすことが喫緊の課題となっています。
このような社会課題を背景に、イミグレーション・ミュージアム・東京（IMM東京）は、アートを通してさまざまな人を巻き込みながら「多文化社会」について考えるプロジェクトを行ってきました。2021年冬に開催する展覧会では、アーティスト、活動団体、市民といった多角的な視点から「現代日本における多文化社会」を浮き上がらせることを試みます。海外にルーツを持つ人びとが身近に暮らす今日、彼／彼女たちは自身のルーツと日本での生活とをどのように適応、保持、融合しているのでしょうか。IMM東京は、そのような潜在化した出会いを掘り起こす試みであり、多くの人々の目に触れ、語られることで、すでに多文化化している日本の状況に対する意識を醸成することを目指します。
