The more than 100-year-old Denchu Hirakushi House and Atelier where this exhibition is being held was the home and atelier of Denchu, a sculptor with close ties to this university. It is still used by an NPO as a space to promote arts and culture. We feel that the history and memories of the Denchu House and Atelier resonate strongly with the concept of this exhibition. We believe that it also resonates with the concept of the I LOVE YOU project, empowering the creativity born of everyday life through diaries, and rediscovering “the diversity of those people who have become invisible in society” through the themes of the exhibiting artists.
The rapid development of contemporary society has seen people’s lifestyles change dramatically with the onset of environmental problems and the pursuit of convenience. At the same time, traditions and values that have existed since olden times continue to exist within these same societies. Our everyday lives are woven of a mixture of things that change and things that remain the same, and now with coronavirus our former everyday lives will doubtless change into a “new normal.” In the midst of all this, what is it that will be replaced? And what is it that we will continue to require even once our lifestyles have changed?
展示会場となる築100年以上の旧平櫛田中邸アトリエは、本学ともゆかりの深い彫刻家田中の自宅兼アトリエであり、NPOにより文化芸術の発信基地として現在も使われてます。田中邸アトリエの歴史と記憶が本展のコンセプトと強く共鳴すると感じています。それはまた、I LOVE YOUプロジェクトのコンセプトとも、日記を通じて「生活の中から生まれる創造性」をエンパワメントすること、また、出展作家のテーマを通じて「社会の中で見えにくくなっている人々の多様性」を再発見することによって共鳴していくと考えています。
現代社会の急速な発展と共に、人々のライフスタイルも環境問題や利便性の向上などによって大きく変化してきた。その一方で、古くからの伝統や価値観もまた同じ社会の中で残り続けている。そうして変化するものと不変的なものとが交錯するところに私たちの日常は織りなされてきたが、今またコロナ禍によって以前の日常生活はさらに「新しい日常」へと変わっていくのだろう。ではその中で、新陳代謝されていくものとは何か？あるいは、ライフスタイルが変わっても求められ続けるものとは何か？
