Many African cities are in the midst of rapid urbanization and teeming with people, whilst the suburbs are home to abundant nature and retain landscapes and ways of life unchanged for generations. On a daily basis, you will find here both a range of attractive and creative activities, humdrum daily life, and tragedy that makes you want to cover your eyes. “Africa” is the name of a continent, and a place where more than a billion people live, yet the reason why its beauty, triumphs and tragedies are not widely shared is not solely because the continent is too big. Robert Venturi published “Learning From Las Vegas” in 1972. In it, he uses his observations of the city of Las Vegas to cast new light on and bring a new perspective to things that architects and creatives at the time had overlooked or tried to ignore.
By using a variety of methods to observe and record the rapidly changing cities and regions of Africa, we hope to make people think about the cities and towns we live in, and about the way we live. Alongside collaborators like Ugandan photographer Timothy Latim observing, recording, expressing and creating locally, we will continue our research into these distorted yet beautiful towns and cities.
アフリカでは、多くの都市が急激な都市化の只中にあり人で溢れかえる一方で、郊外には豊かな自然や長く変わらない風景や暮らしがあります。様々な魅力的で創造的な活動も、淡々とした日常も、目を覆いたくなるような悲しい出来事も、日々そこにあります。‘アフリカ’とは大陸の名前で、10億人を超える人々が生きる場所であるのに、その魅力やそこで起きている喜劇・悲劇が十分に共有されていないのは、大陸が大きすぎるからだけではないように思います。ロバート・ヴェンチューリは1972年に『ラスベガス』（原題“Learning From Las Vegas”）を出版しました。ラスベガスという街の観察を通して当時の建築家やクリエイターが見過ごしていた、もしくは見ることを避けていた事柄にスポットライトを当て、新たな視点を与えました。
急激に変化するアフリカの都市や地域を様々な方法で観察、記録していくことで、私たちが暮らす様々な都市や街、暮らしについて考えるきっかけになればと思います。ウガンダ出身の写真家Timothy Latimなど、現地で観察と記録、表現や創作をつづけているコラボレーターと共に、その歪で魅力的な都市や街について探っていきます。
